Hello! My name is Kira and I decided to stay 5 months in Newfoundland.

Before I was leaving I couldn’t imagine how awesome it’s going to be. I was probably the happiest person ever. I had a great host family and host sister. We had so much fun together. All we could think of was to plan the next trick on each other. Sure, it took some time till we figured out that we can do that, but also in the time we weren’t joking, we had great conversations and fun.

After a few days in school I already had some new friends. We met at their houses, went to the mall or went to Jungle Jims (an awesome restaurant). But just to have some people to eat your lunch in school with was just a good feeling!

I decided to do some sports and joined a sport-team from school. That’s probably the best thing you can do. You find so many more friends and sometimes you’re going to find a sport, which you can’t stop doing. I joined the volleyball-team. First it was hard to manage everything, but after a while I got used to it and my muscles stopped hurting.  We had 3 or 4 tournaments during the time I was there and after the first one I played all of them!! I was so proud of myself. I never played volleyball before and in the 4 ½ months I got very good and found some very good friends! And I had so much fun during the practices or the tournaments. It is very helpful to find something to do after school, so you get a daily routine and you don’t think so much about your family and friends back home.

The people here are just amazing and so helpful. Without my host family and my friends the 5 months would not have been as AWESOME as they were.

A big thank you to Charles and Shirley!! I MISS YOU!

Hello, my name is Rodrigo, my family and friends call me Ro. I'm 17 years old and I am from Mexico City and this is my second year in Newfoundland.

I have already studied one year here and decided to come back again for my second year and if you are wondering why, well just keep reading.

When I left my home in Mexico to come to Newfoundland for the first year as an international student, I was so nervous! I had many doubts. What's it going to be like? What am I going to do? What if people don't like me? I tried not to have doubts but it was hard not to. When the plane was just about to land in Deer Lake, I was so nervous, but it was a different kind of nervous. I knew I was going to enjoy that year a lot...how? I don't know, I just knew. I got off the plane and there they were, that was the very first time I saw my host family, I was very nervous, but my best friend was with me and she helped me a lot. We got in their car and started to drive to my new home, we talked about the basic stuff justto get to know each other which made me feel good and safe. Then that's when I noticed them...the stars. I looked out the window and the only thing I could see was the stars.I knew then I had nothing to worry about. It was so peaceful!

After two days of being at my new home and getting settled in, it was time, my first day of school, man I don't think I've ever, ever been that nervous in my life. I arrived at school and I was having these "what ifs" thoughts, but I tried to control myself and stay calm. It was only ahalf day so I never got a chance to meet anyone just a few teachers. I woke up the next morning and it was time, my first official day of school, I got ready, had breakfast, and walk to the bus stop with my new brothers, I got on and 15 minutes later I was at the school with a few more Mexicans which made me feel more relaxed. It was slow at first to meet people but aseach week past, I was making new friends every day. It was so easy to fit in here and I was getting used to the feeling of not being home a bit more...I loved it! Then two months later snow...it was time...go with your friends to the mountain! No parents!! You know how cool that is? That was the first time I went to Marble Mountain and I learned how to snowboard with the help of my two host brothers James and Jordan and my friends. Before I knew it, winter was over! There were only a few months left and I was going to be ready to go back home, but then I really started to think to myself… Ro you really love this place, your friends and your family so I said to myself, I'm going to ask my parents and give it a try and see what they say, and they said no! I only had a few months to make them change their mind! So I kept trying and trying and finally with the help of my best friend and her dad I did it! I got the chance to come back again! Well, that was definitely one of the best feelings in my whole life! My host family, they were so happy too!! Everything was awesome! I didn't tell my friends that I was planning on coming back right away. I wanted it to be a surprise but I wasn't able to keep it as a secret and on the day I was leaving, I told them! "Guess what I'm coming back next year!" They were so excited but for me, I was the happiest person on earth. I went back to Mexico and I never saw my host family or friends for 2 months. We kept in contact by Skype and Facebook but it is not the same thing. I missed them so bad! Finally, September came…I was back! I was so excited to be back!!

If you are looking for the best place on earth to go and spend a year to study, you need to go to Newfoundland. You've got the best people, best scenery, best everything! It is just amazing! I'm very happy that I am back with my host family and with my friends every day at school. At home, with my host family there is not a day goes by that we don'tlaugh! Every dayis just amazing! There is only one thing I don't like and I'm not looking forward toand it's the month of June. I don't know how I am going to handle that! Once you come to Newfoundland you just don't want to leave! And this year… my second year it'sgoing to be so hard! It's not going to be a goodbye…it's going to be see you again soon! I have to say a huge thank you to my Dad back home for everything and this amazing opportunity that he gave me! Thank you to my host family for allowing meto live with them again for one more year!!
